After having yet another daily meeting for juru rupa, our mentors have announced that we will be holding an art exhibition near the end of the year! With the theme Spices.
From here I started brewing some wild ideas, ideas that I’d like to showcase and express through this one heck of an amazing opportunity to get myself out there as an artist.
The theme was great I thought, especially for me. Since I don’t meddle around that much with drawing spices plus not knowing much basic information to begin with, it’s a time for me to start getting with some research!
At first I wanted to go with a piece showing what our environment might look like if everything was replaced with spices, what I imagined was people still living on their day to day lives in a simple yet busy village but with the roads, houses, trees all transformed into the form of the spices we use to cook in our kitchen.
I knew it was going to be challenging, there are a variety of spices in the world that I can choose from, but in the end I’d have to understand its purpose, the taste and how it’ll visually relate to the objects that will be turned into spice.
The rough image was already pictured in my head, like how wood can be related to cinnamon, star anise can be flowers growing out of the ground and other interesting similarities. Until I realized that I was quite lost at some point because of how detailed oriented everything will be, and that there wasn’t much time before the exhibition for me to go on concepting in this path so- 💃 I yeeted myself to something a bit different.
Just like what our mentors suggested, we gotta think out of the box, and I still wanted to stay with the first concept but rather having it in a more simple and concrete focus.
So then the sailors idea popped and that’s what has gotten me this far joining the exhibition ✨
* Some quick sketches to get the general idea out
* P.S I don’t usually spend much time concepting before the actual piece so it might look a bit plain-
* Had a lot of fun coming up with these mad lads!
* Though the color scheme doesn’t fully match up entirely in the finished piece because the clock was ticking and I didn’t have much time to go experimenting.
In hawaii means Sailor or Explorer of the Sea.
The God or Goddess of the Sky and Sea.
If I were to be completely honest, the making process of this drawing wasn’t that prettyl- there were times where I felt pressured, unsure, scared of what will happen next. Because my style works with a lot of details it would be reasonable of me to set a good time management in order to keep myself on track and have the things I want to create for the piece done as I want them to be, but that’s not exactly how things went.
* The scene sketched out first was the second one, where the sailors settled down on an island to camp for the night.
To make the piece have a little more meaning into it, I wanted to make the personality of each character match with the types of spices.
Each spice has its own form, flavor and aroma. So for each two drawings it will represent the personality of Aukai and Varuna.
Varuna is the sweet, kind and supportive person of the team, but is strong and helpful to, so what I put are spices with sweet flavors and nice aromas. Vanilla, mint, tea are the main focus.
* First scene sketch (wip)
The raft is probably one of the longest time I’ve spent sketching- but different from the drawing showcasing Varuna, this one I wanted to fill with a more fiery and daring feel! In which is what kind of person Aukai is.
Without a care in the world, he goes on sailing away from island to island. There’s almost nothing that he’s afraid of, mostly unpredictable and stands proud with his ideals.
Going through with the painting process was where the tight spot has hit me, because my weekend has been quite busy back then I got sick chicken pox and had to bedrest for an entire week. After I was healed the remaining time for me to finish coloring with pencils was only a week left before the exhibition. And so I spent sleepless nights to get the job done.
Alright, reading through this might seem like it was really unbearable for me, but believe it or not I had quite a lot of fun zooming to finish the pieces.
Of course there were some breakdowns but it’s nothing too big I couldn’t handle~ because art is something used to express myself, so there won’t be a time where I do not enjoy it at all, despite feeling tired.
And in the end it was all worth it, not everything in the piece was as how I expected to be, but I remembered one of the things our mentor, kak Dudi said
“Some artists may not have the best time management, so it is important to set your mindset from ‘things that are nice to have in your drawing’ to ‘things that are needed in your drawing'”
And frankly, I think I’ve fulfilled my job in doing that.
It’s been one heck of a rollercoaster ride for me preparing for this exhibition, and I wouldn’t have taken it back for the world. I believe this experience has made me grow into a better and more committed person than I was before, so I’m very thankful for that!
If I were to share about this exhibition experience to everyone, it would take many words and phrases to define how I truly felt. But since I’m not really the best with cookin’ up good writings I’ll be making short and brief 💃
The point is, I am really thankful to everyone especially our amazing mentors, friends and families who has given a big portion of their time to support us and help out in making this event possible! If they weren’t there I think It’ll take a lot of time for me to stop sulking around on the couch thinking about what I should be doing with my life- :”D
